Bar Stools

A bar stool is the piece most people get wrong, and the mistake is almost always the height. Buy a counter-height stool for a bar-height counter and your knees hit the underside. Buy a bar-height stool for a counter and you are eating with your chin on the plate. It sounds obvious, but it happens constantly because most shops sell one fixed height and hope for the best.

At Samz Design, we build bar stools and counter stools to the exact height your counter, kitchen island or bar top needs, in solid teak, powder-coated aluminium, rattan and custom upholstery. Made to order in our Shah Alam workshop, whether it is a set of three for a kitchen island or thirty for a cafe opening. Browse the wider dining room range, or keep reading.

Bar Height vs Counter Height: Which Do You Need?

This is the single most important decision, and it comes down to one measurement.

  • Counter height stools (60 to 65 cm seat). For standard kitchen counters and islands, typically 90 to 95 cm tall. This is the most common kitchen-island stool in Malaysian homes.
  • Bar height stools (75 to 80 cm seat). For raised bar counters, pub tables and standing-height surfaces, typically 105 to 110 cm tall. This is what restaurants and bars use.

The gap between the seat and the counter should be roughly 25 to 30 cm for comfortable sitting and legroom. Because we build to order, we do not guess. Tell us your counter height and we build the stool to fit it exactly.

Bar Stool Materials We Build In

Solid teak bar stools

Teak is dense, stable and naturally resistant to the humidity that loosens cheaper stools at the joints. A solid teak bar stool with a properly engineered footrest holds steady under daily use for years. Pair teak stools with a matching teak bar table for a coordinated look.

Powder-coated aluminium bar stools

For outdoor bars, poolside counters, cafe terraces and balconies, aluminium framed bar stools are the right call. The frames are fabricated in-house at our Shah Alam workshop, powder-coated for weather and scratch resistance, and paired with rope, outdoor fabric or mesh seats. See them alongside the wider powder-coated aluminium furniture range.

Rattan and wicker bar stools

Rattan bar stools bring a natural, tropical feel that suits the Malaysian aesthetic. Handwoven by our Indonesian partners, they are lighter than solid wood and work beautifully at an indoor kitchen island or in a shaded outdoor bar. See the full rattan and wicker range.

Upholstered bar stools

For comfort on a hard counter stool, an upholstered seat or fully padded stool makes a real difference, especially for longer sitting. We offer fabric, PU and PVC covers that clean easily and hold up to daily use. The padding can be refreshed later through our cushion cover and upholstery service.

Bar Stools for Kitchen Islands, Bars, Restaurants and Cafes

At home, a set of two or three bar stools turns a kitchen island from a work surface into a casual eating and socialising spot. For open-plan condos across the Klang Valley, the island stool is often the most-used seat in the home.

For commercial spaces, bars, restaurants, cafes, co-working lounges and hotel lobbies, bar stools take constant use from different people every day, so build quality is everything. We supply matched sets in project quantities through our B2B solutions service, with consistent finish and the ability to reorder matching stools later when a venue expands.

If your requirement is a specific bar stool design or a style to match an existing interior, our custom design team can work from a photo, a sketch or a specification.

How to Choose the Right Bar Stool

Four things to decide before you order:

  • Height. Measure your counter or bar top. Counter height (90 to 95 cm surface) needs a 60 to 65 cm stool. Bar height (105 to 110 cm) needs a 75 to 80 cm stool. We build to your exact measurement.
  • Back or backless. A backless stool tucks completely under the counter, saving space and giving a clean line. A stool with a low back adds support for longer sitting.
  • Footrest. Essential on any bar stool, because dangling feet are uncomfortable after five minutes. We engineer the footrest at the right height for the seat.
  • Swivel or fixed. A swivel base suits a social kitchen island where people turn to talk. A fixed base is more stable for commercial settings with heavy use.

Matching Furniture for the Bar and Dining Area

A bar stool works best as part of a coordinated space. Pair your stools with a bar table in the same material, match them to your dining chairs for an open-plan room where the dining table and island are visible together, or add a drink cabinet if you are building a full home bar setup. Because everything is made to order, every piece matches.

Bar Stools FAQs

What height bar stool do I need for a kitchen island?
Measure your island. If it is around 90 to 95 cm tall, you need a counter-height stool with a seat at 60 to 65 cm. If it is a raised bar at 105 to 110 cm, you need a bar-height stool at 75 to 80 cm. Leave 25 to 30 cm between the seat and counter for legroom. Tell us your counter height and we build to it.

What is the difference between a bar stool and a counter stool?
The only real difference is height. Counter stools sit at about 60 to 65 cm for standard kitchen counters. Bar stools are taller at 75 to 80 cm for raised bars and pub tables. The design, material and comfort can be identical. We build to either height, or to any custom measurement in between.

Which material is best for an outdoor bar stool in Malaysia?
Powder-coated aluminium with a rope or outdoor-fabric seat is the most durable for fully exposed balconies, poolsides and outdoor bars. Solid teak also handles the outdoors well but will weather to a silver-grey patina unless maintained. For covered settings, both work, and so does rattan.

How many bar stools do I need for my kitchen island?
Allow about 55 to 60 cm of counter width per stool. A 180 cm island fits three comfortably. A 240 cm island fits four. If you have an L-shaped counter, count only the straight runs, not the corners.

Can I get bar stools to match my dining chairs?
Yes. We can make bar stools and dining chairs in the same wood, finish and fabric so they look like a coordinated set. This is a common request for open-plan spaces where the dining table and kitchen island are in the same room.

Do you supply bar stools for restaurants and cafes?
Yes. We supply matched sets for bars, restaurants, cafes, hotels and co-working spaces through our B2B solutions service, with consistent finish and the ability to reorder matching stools later.

Do you deliver bar stools across Malaysia?
Yes, nationwide across Malaysia, plus international shipping to Singapore, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UK and the US. Contact us for a delivery quote.
