 How to pick a coffee table that actually works

There are five decisions that separate a good coffee table choice from a regretted one.

1. Get the length right relative to your sofa

The design rule most Malaysian buyers do not know: your coffee table should be roughly two-thirds the length of your sofa. Any shorter and it looks lost in front of the seating. Any longer and it dominates the room.

2. Match the height to your seat cushion

Your coffee table height should be within 2 to 5 cm of your sofa’s seat cushion height, or slightly lower.

• Too high and it feels like a dining table
• Too low and reaching your drink becomes an exercise
• Just right and it disappears into the room

Standard coffee table heights fall between 38 and 45 cm. Deep-seat and lounging sofas often pair better with 32 to 38 cm tables. We can build to your exact height on custom orders through our Custom Design service.

3. Leave the right walking distance

Between the sofa edge and the coffee table, leave 40 to 45 cm of clearance. This is enough to walk past, sit down, and stretch your legs without banging your shins.

If you have young kids running through the room, consider rounded corners. If the room is tight, an oval or round coffee table gives you the same surface area with less shin risk.

4. Choose a shape that suits the room

• Rectangular: the Works with almost any sofa, gives the most surface area, easy to pair with Side Tables.
• Square: good for L-shape sofas and rooms with balanced Feels more architectural.
• Round: best for small rooms, tight walkways, and homes with No sharp corners, and it makes the room feel less crowded.

 5. Choose the right material for how you will use it

Not all coffee tables handle the same kind of life. Match the material to the household:

Solid teak is our flagship wood. Rich in natural oils that resist water, insects, and rot, teak is the material of choice for heirloom furniture and outdoor pieces. Sourced through our long-standing Indonesian workshop partners. Ages into a warm patina if oiled regularly, or a silvery grey if left untreated.

Tropical hardwoods including balau, meranti, nyatoh, mahogany, and rubber wood. Dense, durable, and more accessible than teak. Also sourced from our Indonesian partners.

Powder-coated aluminium is fabricated in our Shah Alam workshop. Rust-proof, lightweight, and available in white, teak-tone, dark grey, dark brown, black, and beige. The backbone of our modern and outdoor coffee table ranges.

Stainless steel is used on select premium frames where strength, hygiene, and a clean modern look matter. Fabricated in-house.

Standard sizes work for most rooms. When they do not, we build to yours through our Custom Design service.

Custom aluminium and metal frames are fabricated at our Shah Alam workshop. Choose length, width, height, powder-coat colour, and finish.

Custom solid wood tops and bases are built through our Indonesian partners. Choose dimensions, wood species (teak, balau, mahogany, nyatoh, mixed hardwoods), and finish (oiled, stained, natural).

Mixed-material custom builds combine both processes: metal frame from Shah Alam, wood top from Indonesia. Lead times aligned to the slower component.
