Side Tables

Side Tables for Living Room

You know the moment. You are three episodes into something good, the coffee is getting cold on the floor because there is nowhere to put it, and you are thinking: I need a side table that actually fits beside this sofa. That is usually how it starts. Then you go looking, and you find two options. Mass-produced tables from flat-pack stores that wobble within six months. Or imported designer pieces that cost more than your sofa did. Nothing in between. Nothing that is the right height, the right width, built from materials that can handle Malaysian humidity without swelling or peeling. That is the gap we fill. At Samz Design, we build side tables from solid teak wood and powder-coated steel in our Shah Alam workshop. Every table is made to order. You choose the height, the width, the material, the finish colour. We build it. No minimum order. No standard sizes you have to settle for.

The Problem with Most Side Tables in Malaysia

Walk through any furniture showroom in the Klang Valley and pick up a side table. Flip it over. Nine out of ten are built from MDF or particleboard with a paper-thin veneer on top. They look acceptable in a showroom with perfect air conditioning and careful lighting. Bring one home, and things change fast. Malaysian humidity works on MDF like slow water damage. The edges swell. The veneer starts lifting at the corners. The joints loosen because particleboard does not hold screws the way solid wood does. Within a year, you are back to putting your coffee on the floor. Price is not the issue. You can find affordable furniture that lasts. The issue is material. Solid teak and properly finished steel do not have these problems. Teak contains natural oils that repel moisture from the inside out. It does not swell in the monsoon. It does not crack in an air-conditioned room. It gets more beautiful as it ages, developing the golden-brown patina that interior designers chase on purpose. Powder-coated steel is the other side of the equation. The coating is baked onto the metal at over 200 degrees Celsius, creating a finish that does not chip, scratch, or rust the way painted metal does. It can go from your living room to your balcony and back without any damage. These are the only two materials we use for our side tables. Not because we cannot work with other things. Because nothing else performs as well in this climate.

Three Side Tables, Three Different Jobs

We do not carry fifty side table designs. We carry three, and each one does something specific.

Hilton Tray Side Table

This is pure metal. Powder-coated steel, built entirely in-house at our Shah Alam workshop. The top is a removable tray with a raised rim, so your coffee stays put even if someone bumps the table. It comes in four colours. It weighs almost nothing. You can pick it up with one hand and carry it from the sofa to the balcony to the bedroom and back. Dimensions: 45 cm wide, 53 cm tall. Holds up to 10 kg. Works indoors and outdoors. This is the side table for people who want something practical, moveable, and nearly indestructible. Hotels love it. So do people with small apartments who need furniture that can shift around depending on the day.

Arq Teak Wood 3-Drawer Bedside Table

Solid teak top. Three real drawers. Powder-coated mild steel base built in-house. This is the side table for people who want a surface and storage in one piece. The teak is warm and natural on top, and the steel base keeps the whole thing stable and grounded. Dimensions: W55 x D45 x H60 cm. Yes, it is listed in our bedroom side tables section as a bedside table. But it works just as well beside a deep sofa in a living room, especially if you need a place to keep remotes, chargers, reading glasses, and the small things that always end up scattered across cushions.

LCS Teak Wood Tea Table

A round solid wood table with a classic shape. No drawers, no mechanisms. Just a clean circle of teak on legs. The round profile makes it the softest option visually, which matters in living rooms full of straight-edged furniture. It breaks up the geometry without adding clutter. Available in custom sizes and finishes. Works as a living room accent table, a lounge piece, or a small cafe table.

How to Choose the Right Side Table for Your Living Room

Forget style for a moment. The first question is practical: what job does this table need to do? If you just need a surface for drinks and a lamp, pick something lightweight and easy to move. The Hilton Tray Table is built for exactly this. It disappears visually when you are not using it and shows up when you need it. If you need storage, the Arq is the better choice. Three drawers mean your living room does not need a separate organiser for the small things that accumulate around a sofa. If you want a visual accent, the LCS round tea table adds warmth and shape without competing with the rest of the room. Now, the practical details that matter more than most people realise. Height. Measure from the floor to the top of your sofa armrest. Your side table should be within 5 cm of that number. Too low, and you are reaching down awkwardly every time you grab your phone. Too tall, and the table looks like it belongs to a different furniture set. Most Malaysian sofas put the armrest between 50 and 65 cm, which is why our tables sit in that range. If yours is different, tell us. We build to your number. Width. The table should not extend past the depth of your sofa arm. If it does, it blocks the walkway and makes the room feel cramped. For most sofas, a side table between 40 and 55 cm wide works well. In a smaller apartment or condo, go narrower. We can adjust. Clearance. Leave at least 40 cm between the side table and the nearest walkway. Less than that, and people clip it every time they walk past. More than that, and you are wasting usable floor space. Material for your situation. If you have young children, skip glass-topped tables entirely. If the table will sit near a window or sliding door where it catches afternoon sun, powder-coated steel holds up better than untreated wood. If you want something that looks richer over time without any extra work, teak is the answer. It does not need polishing or refinishing. Just wipe it down.

Side Tables for Condos and Small Living Rooms

More than half of our residential customers in the Klang Valley live in condominiums and apartments. Small living rooms are not a limitation. They are a design constraint, and constraints produce better results. In a compact space, a side table needs to earn its floor area twice over. It cannot just hold a lamp. It needs to also store, serve, or move out of the way. The Hilton Tray Table weighs under 4 kg and takes up less than 0.2 square metres of floor space. You can slide it beside the sofa at night and move it to the kitchen in the morning. For a studio apartment or a condo living-dining area, this kind of flexibility is not a nice-to-have. It is the only way to make the space work without feeling cluttered. For slightly larger condos, nesting side tables are worth considering. These stack into a single footprint when you do not need them, then spread out when guests come over. We can build nesting sets in teak or steel or a combination of both. Contact us with your dimensions and we will design around your space. Round side tables also work better than square ones in tight layouts. No sharp corners means no bruised shins when you navigate past the sofa in the dark. The LCS Tea Table’s circular shape was designed with exactly this in mind.

Side Tables for Hotels, Cafes, and Commercial Projects

Side tables take more punishment in a commercial setting than any other piece of furniture. Guests put wet glasses on them. Staff move them daily. They get bumped, dragged, and loaded with things they were never designed to carry. This is where material quality stops being a selling point and becomes a cost calculation. A cheap MDF side table in a hotel room lasts 18 to 24 months before it needs replacing. A solid teak or powder-coated steel table from Samz Design lasts years without showing wear. Over a five-year period, the teak table is cheaper. It just costs more upfront. We supply side tables to hotels, resorts, restaurants, and serviced apartments across Malaysia and internationally, including Singapore, UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Bulk orders are handled through our B2B solutions service, with consistent quality across every unit and customisation for your specific room layouts. If you are an interior designer or project manager specifying furniture for a commercial fit-out, reach out directly. We work from your drawings and deliver to your timeline.

What Makes Our Side Tables Different from What You Will Find Online

We are not the cheapest option. We are not trying to be. Here is what you get when you order a side table from Samz Design that you do not get from a marketplace listing or a flat-pack store: Your exact dimensions. Not “approximately 50 cm.” Exactly 47.5 cm if that is what fits your space. We do not round up or down. We cut to your specification. Real materials you can verify. Flip our table over. Feel the weight. Look at the grain. Solid teak feels and sounds different from veneer. Powder-coated steel has a specific texture you can feel with your fingernail. We do not hide our construction behind stickers and packaging. Learn more about the materials we use. A workshop you can visit. Our Shah Alam showroom and workshop are open. You can see where and how your table is built. You can meet the team. That is a level of transparency most furniture sellers cannot offer because they are reselling stock from a catalogue they have never visited. After-sale support that exists. If something scratches, loosens, or needs adjustment after delivery, our maintenance and repair service handles it. You are not emailing a faceless returns department. You are speaking to the same team that built the table.

Side Tables for Other Rooms

While this page focuses on living room side tables, we design and supply side tables for every room in your home. For bedroom side tables and nightstands, visit our Bed Side Tables collection. Our bedroom range includes the Arq 3-Drawer Bedside Table and other designs sized specifically for beside a bed. For outdoor side tables suited to patios, poolsides, and garden lounges, see our Outdoor Side Tables collection. These are built in weather-resistant materials designed for Malaysia’s tropical climate. Our Coffee Tables collection features larger surface options that complement living room side tables, creating a complete living room furniture set when paired together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the right height for a side table beside a sofa?

Match it to your sofa armrest. Measure from the floor to the top of the armrest, and choose a side table within 5 cm of that height. For most sofas in Malaysia, that is somewhere between 50 and 65 cm. If your sofa has no armrest or a very low profile, go with a table around 45 to 50 cm so it sits at the level of the seat cushion.

Can I use a teak side table outdoors?

Yes. Teak naturally resists moisture, UV, and insects. Over time it will develop a silver-grey patina if left outdoors without treatment. If you prefer to keep the original golden-brown colour, apply teak oil once or twice a year. Check our care instructions and maintenance guide for detailed advice. Our powder-coated steel tables are also fully outdoor-rated and need no maintenance at all.

What is the difference between a side table and an end table?

Practically, none. Both are small tables placed beside seating. “End table” traditionally means it sits at the end of a sofa. “Side table” is the broader term that covers any placement. We use both terms because that is how people search, but the tables themselves are the same.

Do you make side tables in sizes not listed on your website?

That is how most of our orders work. The sizes listed on the product pages are our standard starting points. Tell us what you need, and we adjust. Custom sizing does not mean longer lead times or premium pricing. It is simply how we operate.

How long does a teak side table last?

Decades, with basic care. Teak is one of the longest-lasting furniture woods in the world. It is the same timber used in boat building and outdoor decking precisely because it handles moisture and sun exposure without breaking down. A properly built teak side table will outlast the sofa you put it beside, and probably the next one too.
