What We Build With and Why

Powder-coated aluminium is the frame material across most of this range, and the reason is simple: it doesn’t rust. We powder-coat every frame in-house at Shah Alam. The coating bonds hard onto the metal surface and stays there through wet seasons without peeling or blistering the way spray finishes do. Teak wood comes from our Indonesian partners. It’s been the go-to timber for outdoor use in tropical climates for a long time, and there’s a real reason for that. The natural oil content in teak resists moisture the way most other timbers don’t. Left untreated over time, the colour mellows into a silver-grey. Olefin rope doesn’t absorb moisture and dries fast after rain. UV resistance is built into the fibre, so it holds its colour in direct sun without fading quickly. We weave it onto each aluminium frame at the Shah Alam workshop. It’s a good fit for open, uncovered spots like pool decks and garden terraces where full exposure is unavoidable. Viro wicker is synthetic, not natural rattan. It’s a high-density polyethylene weave, UV-stabilised and waterproof. Natural rattan would break down fast outdoors in Malaysia. Viro wicker doesn’t crack, fray or lose its shape. It suits partially covered spots better than full exposure, but it holds up in Malaysian conditions far better than any natural weave material would. Home Setup vs Hotel Project: Not the Same Requirement

Someone sorting out a home garden and a hotel manager speccing 60 pool loungers are both looking at outdoor furniture but need very different things from it.

For a home, it usually comes down to how it looks, how comfortable it is and whether it needs much looking after. A teak dining set sourced from Indonesia, a rope sofa set on aluminium frames and a couple of sun loungers cover most residential outdoor setups in Malaysia without much fuss. FAQs

What materials do you use for outdoor furniture at Samz Design?
Four materials cover the range: powder-coated aluminium, teak wood, Olefin rope and Viro wicker. The aluminium frames are made in-house at our Shah Alam workshop. Rope and wicker are woven here too. Does powder-coated aluminium actually hold up in Malaysian weather?
Yes. Powder coating isn’t a paint layer that sits on top and peels. It bonds onto the aluminium surface and stays there. The aluminium underneath doesn’t rust. You get rust streaks when cheaper steel frames corrode under the surface. That doesn’t happen with aluminium. A wipe-down now and then keeps it clean.

How long before the powder coating starts to go?
With normal use and occasional cleaning, powder-coated frames last a long time without the coating failing. If the frame gets a hard scratch that goes down to bare metal, it’s worth touching that up to stop any oxidation starting there. But the coating itself doesn’t peel or bubble in normal conditions. Why is teak better for outdoor use than other timber options?
Teak has natural oils in the grain that block moisture from getting in. Other timbers absorb humidity and that’s what causes warping, cracking and joints loosening over time. Teak has been used in outdoor furniture in tropical regions for centuries. It stays stable through season changes in a way cheaper timber options don’t. Where does the teak come from?
From our partners in Indonesia. We source it by grade, so the pieces coming through are solid A-grade teak, not composite or plantation offcuts.

Does teak need treating and how often?
Not treating it at all is a valid choice. Left alone, teak weathers to a silver-grey that a lot of people actually prefer. If you want to keep the warm golden-brown colour, one application of teak oil per year does it. Full care instructions are on our furniture care and maintenance guide.

What is Olefin rope exactly?
It’s a synthetic fibre used for outdoor weaving. UV resistance is part of the material, not a coating applied on top, so it doesn’t fade quickly in direct sun. Can Olefin rope handle being left out in full sun and rain all the time?
It’s designed for exactly that. Pool decks, open garden terraces, fully exposed balconies. The UV stability is in the fibre. It won’t look bleached out after one dry season the way cheaper rope alternatives do.

What is Viro wicker and is it the same as natural rattan?
Not the same material at all. Viro wicker is high-density polyethylene, a synthetic weave. Natural rattan is a plant fibre that dries out, cracks and deteriorates quickly in outdoor conditions. Does Viro wicker fade or crack if left outside in Malaysian weather?
It holds up well, but it does better with some cover over it. A covered terrace or pergola extends its life significantly. In a fully uncovered setting with constant direct sun from all angles, rope on aluminium is the more durable option. For anything with partial shade, Viro wicker is fine.

Which material is best for a pool deck or somewhere fully exposed?
Powder-coated aluminium with Olefin rope is the most reliable combination for fully exposed settings. Teak handles full exposure well too. Viro wicker is better where there’s at least some shade. What’s the actual difference between Olefin rope and Viro wicker in terms of look and feel?
Rope gives a structured, linear weave pattern. It reads as clean and modern. Wicker is denser and more textured, warmer in tone. Both handle outdoor weather well. The choice mostly comes down to the look you’re after and how exposed the spot is. For full exposure, rope is slightly more hardwearing. For partial shade, wicker gives a softer, more traditional feel.

How do you clean these outdoor materials?
Aluminium frames just need a wipe with a damp cloth. For rope and wicker, water and mild soap with a soft brush if there’s any dirt sitting in the weave. No sealants or protective sprays needed on any of them. For teak, an occasional oil if you want to hold the colour, nothing if you’re happy to let it weather naturally. Can I put a teak table with aluminium and rope chairs?
